There's a reason buyers from the United States to the Middle East recognize the name "Jepara" without needing further explanation. The title "The World Carving Center" isn't an empty marketing slogan — it's a distinction earned over more than a century, backed by facts that may surprise those unfamiliar with this industry.
Fact 1: Exports have reached over 100 countries.
In 2015 alone, Jepara's wood carving products were recorded as being exported to 113 countries — a reach rarely matched by other traditional craft centers worldwide. This demonstrates that Jepara carving's appeal isn't a local or regional phenomenon, but genuinely global.
Fact 2: Its foundation was built centuries ago.
Unlike many creative industry hubs that emerged within the past few decades, the roots of Jepara's carving tradition trace back to the Kalingga and Majapahit kingdoms, enriched through cultural exchange with China during Queen Kalinyamat's reign, and further refined through the movement pioneered by R.A. Kartini in the early 20th century.
Fact 3: It has had a formal education system since 1929.
Jepara was one of the first regions in Indonesia to have an official vocational school for furniture and carving — the Openbare Ambachtsschool, which later evolved into a modern vocational education institution. This system ensured carving skills weren't passed down informally alone, from parent to child, but were also systematized and taught formally.
Fact 4: Its motifs carry a distinct, recognizable visual identity.
Motifs such as Trubusan and Jumbai make Jepara carvings identifiable and distinguishable from other carving centers across Indonesia and Southeast Asia — a "visual signature" rarely matched with this level of consistency elsewhere.
Fact 5: This identity is a collective asset, not owned by any single company.
The title "World Carving Center" is a reputation built together by thousands of artisans and businesses across Jepara over multiple generations. This means every manufacturer operating in Jepara — including us — inherits this legacy while also bearing responsibility for keeping it relevant on the world stage.
Yet maintaining this title amid increasingly fierce global competition is no simple matter. Challenges such as raw material scarcity and price pressure mean that upholding quality standards requires ongoing, deliberate effort — not something that persists automatically due to history alone.
For us at Sebatik Carpentry, being part of Jepara means accepting that responsibility — ensuring every product leaving our workshop is worthy of carrying the name "Made in the World Carving Center."
