When purchasing teak furniture from Indonesia for a villa, hotel, or residential project in Europe, there are two terms worth understanding before signing any contract: SVLK and FLEGT. These are not mere administrative stamps that add pages to your shipping documents — they are guarantees that the wood you're buying comes from a legal, traceable source, not from illegal logging that harms forests.

SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu, or Timber Legality Assurance System) is Indonesia's national certification system, ensuring that the entire wood supply chain — from harvesting permits and environmentally sound logging procedures to transportation and processing — complies with official government regulations. Every furniture company seeking to export must undergo this verification process, resulting in legal documentation that can be reviewed by authorities in the destination country.

FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade) is a cooperative scheme between Indonesia and the European Union. Wood products that have passed SVLK verification and received a FLEGT license (often referred to as V-Legal) can enter the European market without additional due-diligence checks upon arrival — a significant advantage compared to products from countries without such an agreement.

For buyers, these certifications are not optional formalities. Regulations across Europe, including the EU Timber Regulation, are increasingly strict about the origin of imported wood products. Purchasing from a supplier without clear legality documentation can expose buyers to legal risk in their own country, not to mention reputational risk if a product is later linked to illegal deforestation.

The SVLK verification process itself is rigorous. Independent auditing bodies examine the legitimacy of the wood from its point of origin — whether from community forests, state forestry areas, or other legal sources — and confirm that every stage of processing is properly recorded. Companies that pass receive a certificate that must be periodically renewed, not a one-time approval that lasts indefinitely.

Unfortunately, not every furniture producer in Jepara holds this certification. The cost and administrative complexity involved lead some smaller businesses to forgo it, even as international demand increasingly shifts toward certified products.
